Ekahau Design

No matter what business you operate in, it’s now more important than ever to have the most robust Wi-Fi possible.

Analysis & Design

Wi-Fi design is the term used to describe the identification of the most suitable access point products and their associated positioning to achieve optimal performance on your Wi-Fi network.

When it comes to designing a robust Wi-Fi network, we typically use accurate floor plans and take into account building structures such as wall materials, floor materials and other structures which can attenuate Wi-Fi signal.

We use site survey equipment, along with site information to create a coverage map. This allows us to analyse the current coverage and plan any reconfiguration of access points in order to gain optimal coverage. With Ekahau equipment, we can identify metrics and issues such as interference, noise, packet loss and jitter – any of which has a negative impact on conducting business operations.

How do I survey Wi-Fi coverage

When it comes to Wi-Fi design there’s two types of surveys. There’s predictive surveys and a validation survey.

With a predictive survey we use a software called ekahau pro. This allows us to import a scaled floor plan and virtually place access points on the map based on the customer’s requirements.

With ekahau pro predictive surveys, we’re trying to simulate how an access point will perform based on the construction type of the walls within a floorplan.

Ekahau allows us to draw walls on the floorplan based on different construction types. Anything from concrete walls, block walls, stud walls, glass. And this allows us to accurately place WIFI access points based on the customer’s requirements.

How much does a wireless site survey cost?

The cost of a commercial Wi-Fi survey will generally depend on the size of the premises to be surveyed. Surveys may be prices on a ‘per hour’ or they may be ‘fee based’ The adoption of a professional site survey should be regarded as an investment. For more information contact SenSys Wi-Fi on 1800 815 683 or email info@sensys.ie

What does a Wi-Fi survey do?

A Wi-Fi survey uses comprehensive information about the construction of a premises (ideally from a floor plan) to assist a qualified person design where Wi-Fi access points should be placed in a building or location.
Using software, the results of the survey can be displayed visually e.g. what would happen when access points are placed around the premises. The software will show where channels overlap causing interference, and identifies the best possible placement and solutions.
The survey is used to design the Wi-Fi system

How long does a Wi-Fi survey take?

A Wi-Fi survey can take anything from one hour to all day – and longer for large facilities. A qualified Ekahau Wi-Fi designer will walk prepare the schema in advance, and walks through the premises with a piece of hardware called Ekahau sidekick. Following the survey, they will analyse the results, tweaking designs to deliver the optimal positions of hardware.

What is Wi-Fi heat mapping?

Heatmapping is a visual representation of the coverage projected or actual or Wi-Fi coverage in indoor / outdoor situations. Results will indicate signal strength, quality, density and interference. Heatmaps are useful for planning for the placement of Wi-Fi access points, for validation, and for troubleshooting.

How do I create a heat map for Wi-Fi?

A heatmap for Wi-Fi access points is created using specialist software, along with data generated from a Wi-Fi survey. Read about Ekahau heatmaps here

What is the first step that you should perform when performing a wireless site survey?

Ideally, the first step in performing a wireless site survey for Wi-Fi access points is accessing an accurate floor plan. This can be used to identify the materials used in the fabrication of the premises. The survey can do a physical inspection to confirm that the materials (walls, doors, floors) are constructed as outlined.

At SenSys Wi-Fi we use a software called Ekahau Pro. And this software helps us design high performance Wi-Fi networks.
Ekahau is a software that allows us to perform predictive and validation surveys for high performing Wi-Fi networks. It also helps us to virtually drag access points onto a floor plan to help predict Wi-Fi coverage based on the construction type of the building.
This information helps us to accurately design high capacity Wi-Fi networks based on customer requirements. We also use a piece of hardware called an Ekahau sidekick. So this allows us to do on the spot network analysis including taking measurements on signal strength, secondary signal strength, channel overlap, noise and conduct heat map analysis.
This allows us to lean exactly how many access points we need. And where they need to be placed for a high performing Wi-Fi network.
This helps us establish a solid Wi-Fi network infrastructure for your building type and your network requirements.

Why wireless site survey is required?

The placement of Wi-Fi access points should be designed from a wireless site survey
Wi-Fi design allows us to eliminate the guess work when it comes to designing a high-performance wireless network.
So, with good Wi-Fi design we can eliminate areas with poor coverage.
With good Wi-Fi design we can avoid applying too many access points as this causes co channel interference, which negatively impacts on network performance.
It also helps us to avoid channel overlap which also reduces Wi-Fi network performance.
Wi-Fi design helps us with troubleshooting in order to eliminate issues with reliability connectivity and slow performance issues.

What are the different types of wireless site surveys?

When it comes to wi-fi design there’s two types of surveys. There’s predictive surveys and a validation survey. With a predictive survey we use a software called Ekahau pro. What is included in a site survey report?

A site survey report should contain data referring analysis of the premises, hardware and software using specialist equipment. The report should contain the following data: – signal strength min – Signal to noise ration min – Data rate min – Channel interference max – Round trip time (RTT) max – Packet loss mass – Secondary signal strength min
